April is looking to be a month packed with lots of different fun things:
Every Monday night, Tangi Ropars and I are hosting Balfolk/Breton Folk Dance nights.
We want to bring some folk dance culture from France, Belgium and
Holland over to Toronto. We'll be teaching dances, teaching tunes, and
just having a good time from 7:30-11:00 every Monday at El Cafecito's Espresso Bar (near Dovercourt and Bloor)
Every Wednesday from 4-6pm I'm hosting Fiddles in Kensington, at Graffiti's.
Every week will have a featured fiddler and the second set will have
special fiddling guests. Graffiti's is a great place in Kensington
market with a funky old piano ... I'm excited to be doing a bunch of
piano playing as I seem to be always on the fiddle these days!
Every Sunday, John Williams and I are back at our favourite neighbourhood venue, the Hawaii Bar! Join us between 9:30pm and 12:30 for a wide range of folk tunes and improvisations on clarinet, fiddle, accordion and harmonica. (989 Dovercourt, @ Hallam)
Life has been exciting as always since January! Some things I was up to:
February took me to the mountains of BC, some family time and some great shows in Prince Rupert, Prince George and Smithers with John David Williams.
In March I had the privilege of working with Theatre Lab in the production "To the Last Cry". I was the musical director and got to perform with the actors. A very unique and interesting style of folk inspired physical theatre/clown and mask work. The 6 show run took place at Factory Theatre in Toronto.
Well 2012 finished just as busy as 2013 is shaping up to be!
At L'Alliance Francaise de Toronto, John Williams and I had the
privilege of improvising music to a few short films. The oldest of which
was "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" made in 1902 by George Méliès! It was a
sold out crowd of kids and adults alike. One version in black and white,
one in colour, some films by Paul Walty, and others by elementary
Then it was Christmas and New Year's in New York with the Lemon Bucket Orkestra. We performed as part of an experimental theatre play involving pagan solstice rituals and Ukranian Christmas traditions. 4 sold out shows at La Mama Theatre in Manhattan, and a New Year's Lemon Bucket Show at Mehanata.
Acting as old Ukranian ladies, and the grand finale with Yara Arts Group and a folk ensemble from the Carpathian Mountains.
And now ... busy January! Weekly Wednesdays at Graffiti's in Kensington: 5-7pm with John Williams
Weekly Saturdays at the Hawaii Bar on Dovercourt: 9-12 with John Williams
BENEATH THE ICE! in Toronto and Guelph, Jan 9 and 11
With Tangi Ropars, starting the new Fedora Upside Down series at the Painted Lady! (Jan17)
Well its been a long November on tour in Eastern Europe with Lemon Bucket Orkestra. (www.lemonbucket.com) Romania, Hungary, Macedonia, Serbia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany ....
Great experiences but happy to be back in Toronto!
Excited to play some nice duo music with the wonderful John Williams ...
clarinet, fiddle, harmonica, accordion, piano ... in the lovely
Kensington Market at Graffiti's nice and early in the day THIS WEDNESDAY
4pm-7pm! Info here!
John Williams and I will also be playing at L'Alliance Francaise on Friday December 14, improvising to silent films!
In the meantime its getting ready with Lemon Bucket for another trip; this time to New York City for a Ukranian Christmas theatre production!
Well, life back in Toronto is busy as ever! Last week was a nice reunion of Eh?! at the Gladstone and a lovely house concert near Markdale.
Lemon Bucket is in full swing getting ready for our trip back to Romania! This time we're also going to Macedonia, Poland and Ukraine. Its a big job getting flights for all 15 members, so we've started a rockethub account. Please support us! You can get cool things like a private concert or a song with your name in it!
On a sad note, my good friend Nicole (who's clown is Amarelo) is moving to Brazil in a few weeks. The good news is I'm going to visit her to work on her project of her clown. We're holding a fundraiser for her trip and to send musicians from here to work with her in Brazil. October 18th at the Vicotry in Toronto. Event info here! Or if you can't make it, she's got a rockethub set up as well RIGHT HERE!
Well it was typical Dutch weather: rainy and cold, but the dancers didn't seem to mind! They danced so hard they broke the dance floor! Playing with Té at Orfest was a beautiful foreshadowing of an exciting summer full of music, dancing, camping, camp fires and good food!
Next up is Té at Mundial World Music Festival in Tilburg, NL (Sunday June 17 at 7:30pm)
