Emilyn loves teaching, especially when it comes to sharing her passion for music. Starting to give lessons when she herself was just 14 years old, she has had experience teaching private lessons to students of all ages and levels, in workshop settings and intensive camp settings.
Emilyn has developed a unique method of teaching piano which includes a combination of learning by ear, reading music, and self expression through improvisation. She also thrives in sharing her love of playing with chords on the piano with those who are only used to playing with sheet music. She has a special way of breaking down the barriers of sheet music for those who want to use their ear more and let their fingers be dictated by their ear.
She also has a wide repertoire of fiddle tunes available to teach by ear, including many Oliver Schroer (Olitunes), both recorded and unreleased.
She is also available to work with youth or amateur music groups, polishing their ensemble sound and tightening their playing. Another one of her passions is helping groups arrange music for their particular ensemble and finding new sounds to explore together.
Emilyn is available throughout the year in the Toronto area and for special out of city workshops or camps throughout the school year and summer time.
Emilyn has taught as a fiddle instructor, piano instructor, and led various workshops including improvising, ensemble work, and composition at the following camps:
Goderich Celtic Camp
Goderich Suzuki Camp
Algoma Trad
Castlegar Fiddle Camp
Fiddleworks Camp
Northwest Fiddle Fest
She has also been a mentor for the Valley Youth Fiddlers (Smithers BC), the Step Fiddlers (St. John’s, NL) and worked with young fiddlers in the Northwest Territories through the Kole Crook Society and Strings Across the Sky.
